Filial piety is the source of all virtues. Respecting the elderly community, the members of the World Mission Society Church of God Singapore (SGWMSCOG) express their deepest gratitude to the senior citizens for devoting their entire lives to the nation and their families.

On the morning of Apr 21, 2013, 120 volunteers from the SGWMSCOG arrived at the Singapore Amalgamated Services Co-operative Organisation (SASCO) Senior Citizens’ Home at Choa Chu Kang.

Volunteers were divided into two groups. One group cleaned the lodging area of the elderly, whilst the other group entertained the elderly and the care-givers.

From the top of the cabinets to the blades of fans, the volunteers did their best to cover every spot. With cloths and brushes in their hands, they wiped and scrubbed with a joyful mind. Not forgetting to wash the toilets and wipe the bed frames, they cleaned anything they could find.

Visiting an old folks’ home for the first time, Jasmine Lim, 18, an NUS student with an euphoric smile on her face, expressed her gratitude to have the chance to participate in this event, “It was as if I was seeing my own grandpa and grandma. They shared with me their life experiences and guided me with words of wisdom. I also felt rewarded to spend a meaningful day by making their lodging sparkling clean.”

The residents, care-givers and staff members of the SASCO Senior Citizens’ Home were treated to a series of fun-filled performances such as dance, sing-a-long, and mini orchestra, just to mention a few. The old folks thoroughly enjoyed the performances as they lifted their thumbs up with their brightly lit faces. Each elderly person received a personalised handmade craft folded in the shape of a heart with handwritten notes of  “We Love You” in English and Chinese. Volunteers spent quality time with the elderly by having small conversations and lending a listening ear to the old folks.

The World Mission Society Church of God Singapore donated 50 boxes of tissue rolls, 750 bottles of Yakult cultured milk drink and 32 cartons of noodles to the home, besides daily necessities and toiletries.

“I am actually a shy person by nature. I was nervous before we went up on stage to sing for the senior citizens. However, once we started, the old folks were singing and clapping along with us, all my anxiousness went away. Seeing their encouragement, I too, enjoyed myself on stage. This is a very memorable experience for me. “exclaimed Catherine Teow, 52, who sang a duet with her husband with a Hokkien song titled Chu Lian.
